Connotations and Denotations

Would denotation views differ between age groups as far as being able to evaluate an image, object, artwork, etc. as a whole?

-I believe all age groups can find the connotation, what they see, and denotation, the definition or meaning, of an image, object, artwork, etc. Younger age groups may find it more difficult to find the denotation in something finding it easier to go into detail describing the connotations of a piece. I also think it depends on the subject and how deep or hidden the message is. Obviously, with a piece from Picasso, young children would have trouble defining the artwork as opposed to someone from an older age group who may be able to pick apart the painting and find its true meaning. The article explains this by giving examples of college age students finding the connotations and denotations of the cover of a Rolling Stones magazine, middle school students finding the connotations and denotations of sports team clothing, and finally elementary students finding the connotations and denotations of a teddy bear. Therefore, yes, denotation views do differ between age groups.

  1. I agree with McKenzie, I belive that different age groups can find easiness and difficulty is distinguishing between denotaion and connotations. I just recently found out the difference, and being that i am a college student i still have difficulty deciphering. just as the article stated that college student, and young childern are all different just simply depending on the topic. although it seems to be true that the younder you are the easier you may find in deciphering.

  2. I agree as well with the ideals expressed in this post. Different age groups will have different views when asked to express the connotations and denotations. I feel that this is only due to the amount of information that we are exposed to and that we retain at a particular age. This gives us an advantage over another generation. However, children are getting smarter as time goes on. Ten years ago children were not learning what they are today. Though, depending on the particular pieces of art some might find difficulty while others may not being that age is not a factor. Either way kids are getting smarter and being that they may not be able to express their understandings as well as older individuals, a common ideal of the artwork is expressed between all ages I feel.
